Work from the Drew lab led by Dr. Jonathan Downie was recently published in Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology as the inaugural "Technical Advances" article for the journal. The study (Downie et al. CMGH 2025) directly compares droplet-based single-cell RNA sequencing (D-scRNA) and picowell-based (P-scRNA) platforms for studying human mucosal biopsies, which are crucial for the gastrointestinal research performed in our laboratory. Our results highlight that there are unique advantages and disadvantages to each of the platforms, which pose significant challenges in maintaining rigor and reproducibility across studies that use different techniques. We anticipate that our work will help researchers more efficiently approach projects employing scRNA on human biopsy samples.
